The film received generally negative reviews at the time of release and was a box office disappointment, making only $4 million against a $1 million budget. Curtis Mayfield served as the composer and producer of Sparkle 's songs and score. The film stars Irene Cara, Philip Michael Thomas, Lonette McKee, Dwan Smith, Mary Alice, Dorian Harewood, and Tony King. This film not only "recreates the magic of a special period in American history, but it explores the effect of Harlem's musical and social culture on the rest of the world," as well as the linkages to black power. It presents the story of a musical girl group that ends up breaking apart due to individual issues each member faces. With a plot inspired by the history of the Supremes, Sparkle is a period film set in Harlem, New York, during the late 1950s and early 1960s. I felt as though I was watching a Disney special, as oppose to a Raw film like the Original Sparkle.Sparkle is a 1976 American musical drama film directed by Sam O'Steen and released by Warner Bros. It needs to be redone, stick to the original mold and upgrade. Not a good re-make of this timeless piece. I really would like to see someone re-do this film again, and give it justice. I actually went to youtube and watched the original and it moved me to tears, unlike the remake. Whitney Houston's portrayal as the mother was totally different from the mother's character in the original. The costumes during there performances, was off. I wasn't moved by the remake as I was with the original version. I really wish that the creators would've did better justice to the remake of this film. Jordin Sparks was not believable as Sparkle, I felt as though I was watching Jordin trying to act as oppose to believing she was Sparkle. Carmen Ejogo would've been a great "Sista", if the writing of the script was as good as the original.
